For starters, I found out yesterday that the webcam (a Logitech QuickCam 9000 Pro) *does* work with Skype in 10.04. There, by installing various versions, I can confirm that the webcam works up to version 126.96.36.199. after Silverlight plugin was installed from Visual Basic 2008. A reboot will be needed and then I loaded from the adobe downloads the IE version, and then separately the FF version.

I did try rolling back to the 2.6.32-40 kernel and checking and it still crashed with that. Which is interesting because the computer is 6 months old. Flash works perfectly fine with all non-webcam applications. Time to move on.
I suspect that part of the problem is that MSN tinkered with Skype software which wasn't broken, and broke it, in my instance causing the crashes I was experiencing.
